Put the full picture on one page
List balances, interest rates, minimum payments, fees and any changing rate terms. Include essential spending and a cash reserve. This makes the trade-off more concrete than asking whether debt repayment or investing is always better.
Compare certainty with uncertainty
Interest avoided by paying down debt is different from a projected investment return. A risky investment may perform better or worse than your assumption, and tax can change the comparison. Loan terms, prepayment rules and employer retirement benefits can also affect the choice.
Leave room for a setback
Using every available dollar for debt may leave you borrowing again after an emergency. At the same time, keeping large idle balances while costly debt grows can slow progress. The workable balance depends on your obligations, income stability and access to funds.
Model the borrowing side separately
DinoStacks focuses on building wealth. NumberPond, our companion site, covers mortgage, debt and credit calculations. Use current account statements and actual loan terms when comparing scenarios; a generic calculator cannot determine eligibility or the best personal decision.
